The game has changed in military leadership. Earlier this week, The Washington Post published a fascinating account of the recent firing of Gen. David D. McKiernan, formerly the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. As the article notes, it was the first dismissal of a wartime theater commander since President Truman removed Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the Korean Conflict. Surely, one would think, a top-level military leader such as McKiernan must have committed a serious strategic blunder, or shown some kind of MacArthur-like obstinacy to deserve such a humiliating, high-profile sacking.
