The death of the corporate mainframe has been greatly exaggerated. After a period in which many companies experimented with decentralizing their information systems (IS) organization, the pendulum is swinging back once again. Companies are consolidating data centers, beefing up the authority of their central IS staffs, and establishing companywide technical standards and work procedures.
