For the past twenty-five years I have been studying Toyota and teaching others what I’ve learned. Whenever I visit a Toyota manufacturing plant or R&D center I come away with new insights and inspiration. In The Toyota Way I formulated a set of management principles organized into a four-level model: philosophy (think long-term for the benefit of customers and society), processes (eliminate waste), people (challenge and develop them), and problem solving (find the root cause, reflect, and learn). Many organizations including hospitals, financial institutions, retail stores, government agencies, the department of defense, and Toyota competitors like Ford have used these principles to make amazingly positive transformations of their processes and culture.
